It is late 1944 and the allied forces have control over most of Europe, but two small pockets are left at the atlantic coast of France, one around St. Nazaire and another around the city of Lorient.
They are the mighty german submarine bases. The base in Lorient is the largest concrete construction the the world had seen till that day, more than 250.000 cubicmeters of reenforced concrete have been used to build the three keroman bunkers.
In 1942 the allied airforces started a massive bombing campaign on the base but they were never able to brake a hole through any of the bunkers, not even with their largest bombs.
The base were classified as "Festung Lorient" in the german navy and defended by more than 15.000 soldiers and more than 300 heavy caliber guns. The base were never attacked on ground, the massive defence would have given the allied forces heavy losses, but surrendered peacefully on May 10. 1945. |
