yep... simple shapes can  become a masterpiece (not saying this is a masterpiece)
i think with a bit of patience most people can achieve high results in 3d .

True for any human activity but at higher levels 3d (as any other artistic activity) takes a bit more then just patience.

@If751 Terragen can produce some very high quality images. It just takes experience.

@LoD94 Abstract really doesn't have to have a "point," but I was kind of going for a "creature-ish" design

Marcin's right. 3D design takes a certain amount of skill and mental ability, not just patience. Like some people make better writers or basketball players than others, some people are naturally better as 3D artists.

yes I agree, but what i meant was nice results not top level cg...."practice makes perfect" and you have to realy like 3d development not just doing it just because its cool or something... i'm know my way around in 2d  and photo edit but i'm still green in 3d. i'm not just jumping to 3d like some fools i know... anyway i'm working on something i'll post it here in a couple of weeks don't expect anything fancy (if it will be anything at all ;-p )

All right peoples, new masterpice on the way. (grins) This  is a simple rocket that I made working off of a real model that I had on hand. Say what you think.

edit: I suggest that the "Flute Glass" have a higher specularity level and perhaps subsurface scattering.

I'd say- if model is what you want to show- make it more visible. There is a lot of unused (and thanks to this checkboard texture very aggresive) are on sides. Technically model looks ok, congratulations on smoke- I usually fail when it comes to particles

I tried to go for a wind effect with the smoke, but I couldn't figure out how to make it work. However, the rocket was fully keyframed, and I made the particle emitter a child object of it so the emitter would follow the model. This allowed me to simulate a real rocket giving off puffs of smoke as it goes up. The path was also on an angle, so that there is a sort of "blowing" feel.

I might try something like that. At least, when I find out what skinning is.

lol.... (at least in 3D's max 8+) skinning works like: First, just make a bonesystem and apply it to physics-mode, then make your own model over the skeleton, then, from your MODEL's attributes, add Skin, then it should automaticly create the skin over the skeleton, click Edit entitities(or what ever it is, can't remember) the just move the points closer to the MODEL's points locations.... (I am currently getting bugs after that, so don't ask me)

So... skinning is making (and attaching) model(skin) over bonesystem(e.c. skeleton)

@ LoD94 In regard to the hands, I think that you could take a reference image of a hand and use that in the background to give the hands more depth.

So you mean modeling by "Blue print"? It's not that easy, because you need to do the hands from only ONE box, to make it look like good.... so.... it's a little.... hard? ;) well... if u have some tip please tell me :P

*edit*

I mean.... when you are doing the hand(s) from only one box, you need to think every single step 10 times...

You could do it that way, but I prefer to use a spline-based method. I'm not sure how that would work in organic modeling, though :)

Hmm...picture...picture.... Guess I'll throw in a WIP.
